Airmail Stamp

A stamp specifically issued to pay for the postage of mail transported by air.

An Airmail Stamp is a special type of stamp used for mail that is sent by air. These stamps were created to pay for the extra cost of flying a letter or parcel by plane instead of sending it by land or sea.

Airmail stamps were first introduced in the early 20th century when airplanes started carrying mail over long distances.
Airmail stamps often feature airplanes or flying-related designs to show they are for air transport.
One early and famous example is the 1918 US 24c "Curtiss Jenny" stamp.
Airmail stamps aren't just for airplanes! Some stamps were created for mail sent by other air transport methods, like balloons, airships (Zeppelins), helicopters, and even rockets. These unique stamps help collectors learn about different ways mail was transported by air.

Did you know that the first airmail flight took place in 1911 in India? The mail was carried by plane from Allahabad to Naini and received a special cancel depicting an airplane, mountains, and “First Aerial Post, 1911, U. P. Exhibition Allahabad.”
