Republic of Cabo Verde

Cabo Verde’s volcanic islands, surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean, support a mix of arid landscapes and coastal ecosystems, home to unique plant and animal life.

Flora and Fauna

Cabo Verde’s waters are rich with marine life, including several species of sea turtles, such as the endangered loggerhead turtle, which nests on its beaches. Humpback whales migrate through the surrounding ocean, while dolphins are often seen off the coast. The islands are home to several endemic bird species, including the Raso lark, found only on Raso Islet, as well as the Cape Verde warbler and the Iago sparrow.

Despite its dry climate, Cabo Verde’s flora includes the Cape Verde date palm, which is well adapted to arid conditions. Mountain regions support patches of acacia and tamarisk trees, while coastal areas feature salt-tolerant plants such as mangroves and beach morning glories.

  • The grey-headed kingfisher (Halcyon leucocephala) is the national bird.
