Flora and Fauna

Chad’s varied landscapes range from the Sahara Desert in the north to savannas and wetlands in the south. The Ouadi Rimé-Ouadi Achim Reserve hosts endangered species like the scimitar-horned oryx and addax. Elephants, lions, and giraffes roam Zakouma National Park, one of Central Africa’s last strongholds for large wildlife. The Bahr Aouk and Salamat rivers support rich birdlife, including the black-crowned crane. Vegetation includes the resilient acacia tree, desert date, and doum palm, essential for food and shelter in arid regions.

National Flora and Fauna

• The Goat (Capra hircus) is the national animal. Reflecting its importance in rural life and traditional herding across the Sahel.
• The Baobab ((Adansonia digitata)) is the national tree. Known for its immense trunk and longevity, often called the “Tree of Life” for the shelter, food, and water it provides in arid regions.

Postage Due Stamps – Rock Paintings (1962)

This triangular series from the Republic of Chad depicts stylised animals based on prehistoric rock engravings found in the Tibesti and Ennedi Mountains. These are Design and engraving by Georges Munier, Paris, 1962 the stamps portray creatures that once roamed the ancient Sahara.
The exact species are not named on the stamps but are interpreted from their forms and known archaeological parallels.

Issued in 1962: 50 centimes – Hippopotamus (Hippopotamus amphibius), a common subject in ancient Saharan rock engravings.

Issued in 1962: 50 centimes – Antelope, likely Greater Kudu (Tragelaphus strepsiceros), recognised by its long spiral horns.

Issued in 1962: 1 franc – Antelopes, probably Scimitar-horned Oryx (Oryx dammah), a species once native to the Sahel region.

Issued in 1962: 1 franc – Antelopes, possibly Dorcas Gazelles (Gazella dorcas), shown in stylised prehistoric form.
