Flora and Fauna

Ethiopia is home to unique wildlife. The country’s diverse landscapes range from high mountain plateaus to arid lowlands, supporting species found nowhere else on earth. The Ethiopian wolf, the rarest wild canid, roams the high-altitude grasslands, while geladas, the only grass-eating monkeys, live in the rugged mountains. The country’s birdlife includes the striking thick-billed raven and the blue-winged goose, both endemic to Ethiopia.
Among its unusual plants, the giant lobelia towers over the Afro-alpine meadows, and the dragon’s blood tree, with its umbrella-shaped canopy, thrives in remote regions. Ethiopia’s mix of rare species and diverse landscapes makes it a biodiversity hotspot.
